What Hospice IS
A philosophy of care, not a place.
Hospice focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life wherever the patient calls home—whether that’s a private residence, nursing facility, or assisted living.Patient- and family-centered.
Hospice involves a team approach—including nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, volunteers, and physicians—to address physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.Support for advanced or terminal illness.
Care is intended for patients with a life expectancy of six months or less, if the illness runs its normal course. It can be extended if eligibility continues.Comfort-focused care.
The goal is to manage symptoms and relieve pain, not to cure the underlying disease.Fully covered benefit.
Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance, including medications, equipment, and supplies related to the terminal diagnosis.Support for loved ones.
Families receive emotional and spiritual support, caregiver education, and bereavement services.Available 24/7.
The hospice team is on call around the clock to provide support and respond to changes.
What Hospice IS NOT
Not giving up hope.
Hospice shifts the focus of hope—from curing the illness to maximizing comfort, dignity, and meaningful time. Not only for the last days of life.
Many patients benefit from hospice for weeks or months, not just the final days. Not a location or facility.
Hospice does not mean moving to a “hospice house.” Care is delivered where the patient lives. Not the same as palliative care.
While both focus on comfort, hospice is specifically for patients nearing the end of life and no longer seeking curative treatments. Not limited to cancer patients.
Hospice serves people with any terminal illness, such as heart failure, dementia, lung disease, kidney disease, or neurological conditions. Not taking away care.
Hospice provides more frequent and specialized support, not less. Not a financial burden.
Hospice is a fully covered benefit—patients are not billed for services related to the terminal diagnosis.
